Ferry information for Capri, Italy

Naples: Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa

Capri is a tiny island just off the coast of the historic southern Italian city of Naples. The island can be reached from the ports of Naples by hydrofoil or ferry. Hydrofoils to Capri depart from Naples' Beverello port, situated almost directly opposite Piazza Muncipio. Journey time approximately 40 minutes. Ferries to the island depart from the nearby Calata Porta di Massa, linked to Beverello by shuttle service. The journey by ferry takes 50 to 80 minutes. You will need to use the ferries if you are taking your car to the island.

In the summer season, hydrofoil connections are also available from the small port of Mergellina, situated approximately 300 meters away from the railway station of the same name. From here, hydrofoils depart on an hourly basis and the journey time is, again, approximately 40 minutes.

Hydrofoils and ferries to Capri also depart from Sorrento, Ischia, Amalfi, Salerno, Procida, Castellammare di Stabia.

Hydrofoil and ferry tickets can be purchased at the port, either in advance or immediately prior to departure. Some navigation companies also sell tickets online. If you are traveling with large amounts of luggage or bulky items these will also require tickets. In the busiest periods of the year (during the tourist season), crossings can be fully booked and passengers buying tickets at the port may have to wait some time before being able to board. Published departure and arrival times are subject to variation and it is always wise to get an update from the navigation companies before heading to the port.

Traveling by car?

Those wishing to reach the Island of Capri by car, should head towards Naples or Sorrento. Drivers traveling from the North will need to take the A1 Milano-Napoli motorway; traffic coming from the South, the A3 Napoli-Reggio Calabria motorway. Those driving from the east (Puglia) are advised to use the A14 Napoli-Canosa motorway.

Having reached Naples, Capri bound traffic should take the 'Porto' exit and follow Via Marina and indications for the port of Calata di Porto di Massa and the port of Beverello. To reach the port of Mergellina, drivers will need to take the Naples ring road (A56) and exit at Fuorigrotta (exit no.10), proceeding in the direction of the city center, via the Quattro Giornate tunnel.

Traffic heading for Sorrento should take the A3 Napoli-Reggio Calabria motorway and exit at Castellammare di Stabia (where there is a port operating a few daily crossings to Capri), and follow the indications for Sorrento, along the panoramic road which runs along the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Traveling by train?

To visit Capri travelers need to alight at Napoli Centrale, Naples' principal Trenitalia railway station. From the station, situated in the city's Piazza Garibaldi, the ports of Beverello and Calata Porto di Massa can be easily reached, either by taxi or public transport.

Bus and tram tickets cost 1.10 euro each and can be purchased in any of the newspaper kiosks in the station. Passengers should take either the R2 bus or no.1 tram and get off at Piazza Municipio (Beverello Port is almost directly opposite).

Napoli Centrale Station is linked to all the principal towns of the Vesuvius area and the Sorrentine Peninsula via the Circumvesuviana line. It's worth remembering that Napoli Piazza Garibaldi Station is located in the underground, directly beneath Napoli Centrale.

From the Napoli Campi Flegrei and Napoli Mergellina train stations, passengers can also easily reach the ports of Beverello and Calata di Massa by taxi, underground railway and bus. Mergellina train station is just 300 meters from the port of Mergellina, from where hydrofoils to Capri depart on n hourly basis (summer season only).

Just arrived on Capri?

Hydrofoils and ferries dock at Capri's Marina Grande, the island's old fishing district. To reach the historic center of Capri, visitors can take one of the local ATC buses. The main stop is to the right of the port, close to the navigation companies' ticket offices. Buses depart approximately every 15 minutes.

Another option is the funicular railway, a small train linking Marina Grande with Capri in 5 minutes (entrance opposite the exit of the port). Trains depart every 15 minutes circa, more frequently in peak periods.

To use the funicular railway and buses, visitors should purchase Unico Capri tickets, valid for all forms of public transport on the island, from the ticket office located next to those selling hydrofoil and ferry tickets. There are three types of ticket available: corsa singola (single journey), a orario (hourly) and giornalierio (daily). By leaving a deposit of 1 euro, visitors can use a prepaid electronic card. The deposit will be reimbursed in exchange for the card at any of the island's official ticket offices.

In the busiest times of the year, from April to October, the ticket offices in Capri are always crowded. We advise visitors to purchase Unico Capri tickets at the port of Beverello in Naples, at one of the tobacconist stores.

Taxis wait at the exit of the port of Marina Grande. Taxis are often cabriolet models, allowing passengers to enjoy the thrill of traveling along the panoramic roads of Capri to the full. Tariffs are established by the taximeter. The center of Capri can also be reached by foot, walking along the little lanes which cut across the main carriageway.

Porters are on hand to transport luggage as far as the taxi stand, bus stop and funicular railway station. If you supply them with the name of your hotel and booking number, porters will deliver luggage direct to your hotel. Most hotels on the island of Capri offer a private luggage transportation service and will have a representative at the port of Marina Grande, waiting to greet and accompany guests to the hotel.

It's worth remembering that, during the summer months, non-resident vehicles are not allowed to circulate on the island of Capri.
